Built on Food, Trust, and the Way People Gather

Every lasting company has a story behind it. For Bernstein's, that story begins in 1988 with a 40-seat New York style deli in North Dayton called the Uptown Deli and a founder named Steve Bernstein who saw an opportunity to bring something Dayton didn't yet have.

What started as a neighborhood deli with catering offerings grew into something Steve never could have predicted. As the catering business expanded, Steve made the decision to transition the Uptown Deli into a full off-premise catering company, and Bernstein's Fine Catering was born.

A Company Shaped by People

In 2006, Adam Baumgarten joined as a partner, bringing fresh energy and a shared commitment to the standard Steve had built. Since stepping into the role of owner in 2016, Adam has grown Bernstein’s from a small team into a company of more than 50 full-time employees and 120 total staff who show up every day proud of the work they do.

That growth is rooted in something deeper than numbers. Dayton is home. It is where Bernstein's was built, where its team has put down roots, and where a strong sense of community shapes everything we do. Bernstein's has become a destination for some of the most talented people in Dayton hospitality, people who genuinely care about making others happy and bringing joy to every event they are a part of.

That is what we want every guest to feel: fulfilled, celebrated, and already looking forward to the next one. Dayton may be a small city, but its expectations are anything but small, and that is exactly what drives us.

A Standard That Has Stayed the Same

Menus change. Venues evolve. Events become more creative, more personal, and more detailed. But the Bernstein's standard remains steady: prepare food with intention, serve guests with warmth, and help hosts feel confident from planning through the final plate cleared.

That is the kind of fine hospitality we believe in. Not fussy. Not forced. Just considered, capable, and worthy of the occasion: a total event experience that guests remember long after the evening ends.
